The deal brokered by Alexander Lukashenko to halt an armed rebellion in Russia wasn’t the first time the Belarusian leader has cast himself as a peace maker on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin. On Saturday, Lukashenko helped defuse a crisis as forces from the Wagner paramilitary group moved toward Moscow. “The two presidents really agreed that President Lukashenko would mediate efforts to resolve the situation,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in a press call late Saturday evening, noting that Putin “thanked his Belarusian counterpart for the work done.”Relations between the two leaders stretch back years. In 2014 and 2015, Lukashenko allowed the Belarusian capital, Minsk, to host a series of international talks which sought to end the war in Ukraine’s Donbas region that was being fought between Russian-backed separatists and the Ukrainian army. The agreements, which would become known as the Minsk accords, subsequently went nowhere, because Kyiv believed that they could give Moscow too much say in Ukraine’s future.

CNN —A former staffer who accused Joe Biden of sexual assault has defected to Moscow and spoken to Russian state media in a news conference that lasted several hours. Tara Reade drew headlines during the 2020 presidential race, when she accused then-candidate Biden of sexually harassing and assaulting her when she worked in his Senate office in 1993. Biden has strongly denied Reade’s allegations, and no ex-Biden staffer has come forward to say they ever witnessed or heard about any kind of sexual misconduct in his Senate office. WASHINGTON — President Biden is considering a trip to Europe next month to coincide with the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to three administration officials and a person familiar with the discussions. The White House is exploring ways Biden might mark the one-year milestone in the Ukraine war, the sources said. Biden administration officials have also discussed announcing another major military aid package for Ukraine to coincide with the anniversary of Russia’s invasion, according to three U.S. officials. On Wednesday Biden reversed his administration’s position on sending Abrams tanks to Ukraine, though the tanks are not expected to arrive for months if not a year. Last March when Biden traveled to Europe, he delivered a speech in Poland where he said — controversially — that Putin “cannot remain in power.”
